The Role of Therapy in the Different Phases of Cancer Survivorship

A clinician-focused discussion on integrating therapy into survivorship care and follow-up.

Expert Insight Session: The Role of Therapy in the Different Phases of Cancer Survivorship

In this Expert Insight Session, we explored how therapy can support patients across the different phases of cancer survivorship—from active treatment through early recovery and long-term survivorship. Emotional needs often shift over time, and many clinicians ask: When should I refer? What type of therapy fits best? How can I normalize mental health support without making patients feel “pathologized”?

Our guests, Diane Benfield, LCSW (Therapist) and Diane M. Simard (Patient Advocate), discussed how clinicians can recognize common psychological and emotional challenges at each phase, how to tailor conversations and referrals, and how to reduce barriers that prevent patients from accessing support. The session also highlighted patient-centered ways to integrate therapy into survivorship care planning and multidisciplinary follow-up.
